Alan and Liz Colleran pitched a zip together mattress and duvet set built from memory foam, hand assembled in Yorkshire.

The business is still trading, and what started as one product has grown into something considerably bigger.

The Terms

The Collerans asked for £80,000 for 26 percent of the business, and Hilary Devey backed the full amount at those exact terms, drawn to founders with manufacturing grit over polished pitch decks.

Accepting the numbers exactly as offered kept the ownership structure simple from day one, which likely made it easier for the founders to build on afterward.

One Product Became A Group

Instead of remaining a single item business, the founders used the Raskelf name as the starting point for a wider collection of sleep brands, bringing Duvalay and Summerby Sleep under one roof, later adding baby mattress maker Nursery Connections through a buyout.

That expansion turned a mattress pitch into a manufacturing operation employing more than 120 people across sites in West Yorkshire and Northamptonshire, and the group has since gone through a formal corporate restructure, usually a marker of scale rather than trouble.

Where To Find It Today

The wider group runs its own site at raskelfgroup.co.uk, and the original sleeping-bag style product now lives inside the broader Duvalay range rather than being sold on its own under the old branding.

Hilary Devey died in 2022, but the Colleran family has kept the business running and expanding since, selling direct rather than through Amazon.

Note: Based on the public record; company situations can change, so treat this as a snapshot.
